Simply put, “planned giving” is the transfer of assets to a designated nonprofit organization during a lifetime or as part of an estate plan.

This forward-thinking approach to giving is “planned” because the assets are generally transferred via a will or other written means.

It’s easy.
Planned giving is easy to do and you don’t have to be wealthy to do it. Whether it is naming Growing Gardens in your will or trust for a modest amount, or a gift of a car, house, or other property, there is an easy option that is right for you.

It can involve assets you might never think of.
A life insurance policy. Real estate. Stocks. Business holdings. A checking or savings account. These are all assets that can be donated as planned gifts.

It can provide generous tax benefits.

Most bequest donors choose to make one of these types of gifts:

• Specific bequests
  You describe exactly what you want to leave to a family member or charity. If you want to leave a specific amount, or specific percentage of your estate, this is the type of bequest to use.
• Residuary bequest
  This is a gift of all the “rest, residue, and remainder” of your estate after all other bequests, debts, and taxes have been paid.
• Contingency bequest This type of bequest allows you to leave a portion of your estate to a particular charity if your named beneficiary predeceases you.

General Purpose Residuary Bequest

I bequeath, ______ (insert % amount) of all the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate to Growing Gardens, or its successor organization, a nonprofit corporation as described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Tax EIN 93-1213728.), with headquarters located at 3114 SE 50th Ave, Portland, OR 97206 to be used for educating the future food system leaders of Oregon.

Restricted Purpose Bequest

I bequeath, ______ (insert dollar amount, item of property, or % of residue) to Growing Gardens, or its successor organization, a nonprofit corporation as described in section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Tax EIN 93-1213728.), with headquarters located at 3114 SE 50th Ave, Portland, OR 97206 to be used exclusively for [insert restricted use language here such as: for school gardens, etc.].

Growing Gardens can be a primary or secondary beneficiary of your IRA or retirement plan.  This gift does not require a will or trust and can result in significant tax savings for your estate. Simply request a beneficiary designation form from your financial institution and name Growing Gardens as the beneficiary.

Do you have a life insurance policy that’s no longer needed? Consider naming Growing Gardens as the beneficiary. This type of gift does not require a will and can result in significant tax savings for your estate. Simply request a beneficiary designation form from your insurer and name Growing Gardens as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy.

Have you already named Growing Gardens as a life insurance beneficiary? You can REPORT YOUR CONTRIBUTION ON THIS FORM

If you are subject to Required Minimum Distributions from your tax-deferred retirement account (usually for those 70.5 and older), you can save taxes by donating it to Growing Gardens. Known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution, this payment must be made directly from your financial institution to a charitable cause. So, if you don’t need your Required Minimum Distributions, make a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Growing Gardens.
